Short trip to the Balkans.
July 2008
Dreamed for a long time, the trip to Sarajevo was in fact revealed an exciting experience. The Bosnian town presented itself to our eyes just beautiful, measured with the magnificence of the Austro-Hungarian buildings, clubs and cafes lived by the people, but especially with the Muslim quarter that has fascinated me and Michael to the point of being our Favourite place to get lost.
The signs of war are very few, only a few buildings remain, everything is new and full of life and, perhaps mesmerized by their recent past, we felt a strong admiration for the general desire to overcome the fear. By choosing to take the ferry to Ancona we have shortened the path, so it was possible to make the first step in Makarska, Croatia sea town five hours from Sarajevo, where we arrived on the second day, after a brief stop in Mostar which is a major tourist destination. After three days spent in the cities we visited Dubrovnik and then climbed back overland to the River where we had the pleasure to entertain at dinner with a family of Venetian that's got to break into the middle class. "Wonderful," as he told the lady, it was all wonderful, including horse meat of Michael, however, this short trip is Sarajevo in the Balkans remains in the mind. The faces of the people, the mosques, the silence of this extraordinary and romantic cities outshine everything, even the labor of nine hours of motion made in a particularly hot day, the concern for a passport that was not there and the sadness of the last evening.
